Apley’s System of Orthopaedics and Fractures, 9th ed. 2010

Since the publication of the first edition in 1959, Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures has been an essential textbook for those seeking to understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, its diseases and its response to trauma. The book's success was initiated by the late Alan Apley's skills as a teacher, and the care and forethought that he brought to the presentation of the content. The current authors have developed and extended this foundation to produce a thoroughly modern textbook of orthopaedic surgery, bringing complementary expertise while retaining the book's characteristic philosophy and approach. They are joined by a selection of expert contributors from around the world, who add material on a wide variety of subjects including radiology, open fractures, neuromuscular disorders, and inflammatory arthropathies. This 9th edition echoes its predecessors in following Apley's approach to the orthopaedic patient. As before, the work is divided ino three section: General Orthopaedics, Regional Orthopaedics, and Fractures and Joint Injuries. The material has been fully updated and revised, including the replacement of the majority of the photographs, giving this edition a modern and relevant feel. The illustrations are all provided in a downloadable form on the book's accompanying website.
Apley's System's wide readership of practicing orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduate trainees and residents in orthopaedics and general surgery, A&E specialists and physiotherapists is evidence of the author's ability to instruct and inspire. The book is a trully fitting introduction to modern-day orthopaedics.

Children's Orthopaedics and Fractures, 3rd ed. 2010

There have been many changes in children’s orthopaedics and considerable developments in fracture management, markedly improved use of external fixators and the scientific development of, for example, the Taylor spatial frame to correct complex deformities. The use of ultrasound has increased considerably in the diagnosis of children’s disorders and there are more sophisticated ways of analysing deformities. There are also new classifications for unstable slipped epiphysis and our genetic understanding of children’s disorders has increased exponentially.

Multiple Myeloma and Related Disorders, 1st ed. 2004

During the last decade there has been an enormous increase in knowledge of multiple myeloma and related disorders, reflected in the publication of more than 5000 articles on the subject in scientific journals. Much of this has come about as new technologies have made it possible to refine studies on chromosomes and genes and to gain information about gene expression. Microarray is in its early stage but already there have been pattern descriptions that may have prognostic implications. The impact of chromosomal abnormalities is now clearer than before, and the complicated interaction between the stroma cells, the myeloma cells, and numerous cytokines and their receptors has been better explained. Attempts have been made to utilize this new knowledge to develop targeted therapy and although results are still modest, improvements have been obtained with thalidomide and analogues, as well as with proteasome inhibitors. It is therefore highly appropriate that this new comprehensive reference should appear at this time. The book covers the whole field of multiple myeloma, and also related diseases such as Waldemström's macroglobulinaemia, and incorporates both the basic science underlying the diseases and their clinical management. Each chapter has been written to "stand alone", allowing the reader to dip into particular subject and find information quickly without the need to browse through multiple chapters. In addition to the developments described above, all of which are considered here, many other approaches to targeted therapy are reviewed.
